Approach to Asana

Suzanne’s passion for teaching yoga is based on her own recovery from chronic pain and numbness. Her life completely turned around as she encountered a combination of Yoga asana, related movement modalities, and mindfulness that reached far beyond the physical. A passionate practitioner of therapeutic, alignment-focused yoga, Suzanne has spent thousands of hours over the past decade guiding students to an active understanding of their own body and mind complex.

Suzanne’s deep understanding of human movement, anatomy, and how we can recover our innate strength-based ease in the various body regions, informs all her teaching, whether it is a Hatha, Vinyasa, or Anusara class. Her classes often center on classical peak poses, to which she guides students using a step-by-step approach, intelligent sequencing and clear instructions. Besides other Yoga poses, Suzanne makes use of a wide range of tools, from Physiotherapy, Kinesiology and Mobility Training, Martial Arts, Dance, and more, to prepare the body and make even the most challenging poses accessible. Ultimately, peak poses are not the goal - they are a means to the end of ‘liberating’ specific areas of the body and mind and connecting us to our innate freedom and intelligence. Besides fun, ‘aha’ moments and sweaty options, students can expect individual guidance and effective strategies to reverse common imbalances; they can expect to stay safe as well as having the opportunity to push their own boundaries to experience growth, both physically and mentally.

“My passion for teaching smart, versatile yoga comes from direct experience: Yoga was the missing piece that freed my dancer-academic-self from chronic pain. The balance of effort and letting go turned my life around as I reconnected to my innate physical and mental freedom.”

Suzanne’s Yoga Journey

Her journey began over a decade ago as a stressed-out, pained young mother and museum professional, in a German Ashtanga studio. Here, she found the gracefulness she was missing from her years of dancing Ballet; yet what intrigued her most was the peace she experienced in the practice. In California, Suzanne encountered Anusara Yoga, whose alignment-based and heart-centered method helped her overcome chronic pain and reframe her approach to life’s ups and downs.

From a young age, Suzanne understood the world around her through kinetic movement our body’s relationship with gravity, and through a keen visual sense of ‘line and color in space,’ Growing up, she spent week-ends immersed in the colorful worlds of Kandinsky, Monet, and other early modern artists in Munich’s art museums. These abstract works felt just as real as the vibrant landscapes of mountain, woods, water, and sky of the Bavarian alps that surrounded her every day. Later, she studied interior design, art, and architecture at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She brings this personal history of vivid, multisensory life into her yoga teaching - helping you design your experience in such a way that allows you to tap into the sweetness that comes with being in the moment, in your body, your breath, and your senses.
